PASSION…

At the age of twelve, my mother took me to a cosmetologist at a local Shoppers Drug Mart to teach me how to properly apply makeup. (I think she may have been sick of me layering her four-shades-too-dark foundation on my face, ha ha!) I’m not sure what happened that day – if it was the soft brushes against my cheeks or the rainbow of colour palettes to choose from – I was hooked.

EDUCATION…

In my late teens, I began working at many cosmetic jobs – coincidently Shoppers Drug Mart being my first to having my own cosmetic counter at Sears, but it just wasn’t enough to satisfy my creative passion. I wanted to learn so much more about the beautiful creative work that is Makeup Artistry, so I packed up my things from little Prince Edward Island and moved to the big city of Montreal where I attended one of the most pristine makeup schools in all of Canada, La Salle College. I had the opportunity to study under the guidance of the most talented and incredible woman, Pargol Tavasolian, studying makeup for fashion, beauty, TV, and theatre over the course of a one year program.

FREELANCE MAKEUP ARTIST…

After attending La Salle College, I returned home to PEI to begin my makeup artistry career. I was soon hired by ProMUA Owner/Founder, Savannah Belsher-Maclean, as a contracted makeup artist for weddings, film and television productions, photo shoots, commercials, and events like the East Coast Music Awards and Big Red Festival. I’ve had the opportunity to work with many musicians, artists, photographers, actors/actresses, models, and film crews.

Working in the film industry is one of my favourite areas of makeup artistry, but once summertime rolls around in PEI, Love is in the air! Prince Edward Island is the wedding destination of Canada’s maritimes, and in the past few years I have done makeup for over 100 brides and their bridal parties and families. Being a part of a bride’s wedding day as she prepares to walk down the aisle is truly a main highlight of my job!

MINDFUL MAKEUP…

While my makeup artistry business began to grow, I became increasingly aware of how many products I was coming into contact with every single day. From makeup and skincare products to household cleaners, I started mentally tallying up the chemicals I was constantly surrounded by, not to mention the amount of garbage I was producing from tossing out plastic packaging and leftover product past its expiration date. When I learned that 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream, I knew I needed to make a change to my lifestyle, evolve from the way I was contributing to careless waste, and stop using products that contain synthetic substances and poisonous chemicals (products like generic shampoo, toothpaste, dish soap, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, toxic cosmetics, and much more).

Passionately I feel it is my duty to educate consumers and provide natural cosmetics and skincare to the island. Makeup Artistry is my passion but I also love this earth, together as client and Artist we can make this world a better place, one toxin-free, cruelty-free product at a time! Today, I am so proud to say I am the first and only organic makeup artist on Prince Edward Island, and that my own beauty routine and professional makeup kit are filled with products that are Eco-Friendly, Cruelty- Free, and Organic.

I am very passionate about my makeup artistry career, and I am so very thankful to be where I am today and constantly learning. Thank you to each individual who have contributed to making my dreams come true. – Love, Jack xo
